Introduction
Nyasare Water Supply & Sanitation Company Ltd is a registered & licensed Community-managed Water Services Provider (WSP). It has initially been run by Nyasare Water Supply Association (NWSA) a community- Based organisation (CBO) since its inception in 1993 and inauguration in September 1994.It is supplying water in part of Migori town and its environs-both urban and rural area to the north and west of Migori Town.
To align and cope with the water sector reforms and the new Constitution of Kenya 2010, the Association has been transformed into a water company (NYAWASSCO) with effect from September 2013 under the Companies Act Cap.486, Laws of Kenya.
The project was initiated and implemented through the efforts and generous support of the people of Austria & the Government of Austria (Austrian Development Cooperation),Nyasare community and the Government of Kenya.
Impact/ Achievements
- Water supply has been sustained since its inauguration on 23rd September 1994.
- Prevalence of water borne diseases is reduced in the community.
- Increased demand for clean and safe water as a result of public education awareness creation.
- Sanitation and hygiene awareness are created and practiced. Community Lead Total Sanitation (CLTS) projects in – Uriri & Rongo,Suna East & Kuria East
- Developed more springs. Water production has increased from 220m³/day to 385m³/day
- Population served in service area 40,718 people.
- Revenue collections improved from Ksh. 200,000-465,000per/month, upward trend experienced.
- Water coverage increased from 25 km² to 32km².-Opened up areas for commercial usage- up-rise of commercial buildings.
- Girl child able to attend school continuously due to reduce distance to draw water.
- Mapping of infrastructures-Easy to identify demand for service levels at different supply areas.
- Trainings- improved capacity of workforce to operate the system.
- Investing programme available – purchase of parcels of land for boreholes/springs & creation of distribution lines.
- Time taken reduced to access water by the community due to creation of 9km pipeline.
- 10% contribution for WSTF projects implemented using internal revenue sources.
- Quality of water improved because of rehabilitation of springs.
- Improved hygiene & sanitation in primary schools through construction of VIP latrines in 3 primary schools- Rangenya, Onyalo &Warisia.
- Improved hygiene & sanitation in the 4 sub-counties supported in CLTS projects
- Non-revenue water decreased from 63% to 35% due to replacement of frequent burst point pipelines & fault water meters.
- Increased new individual connections by 429 with a total of 730 active connections.
- Capacity building training improved operation & maintenance, governance & procurement process.
Sustainability plans
- We collaborate with KorondoNyasareWater Resource Users Association (KONYAWRUA) in water management & conflict resolutions
- The catchment area needs to be conserved& protect to guarantee sustained discharge of the springs in the long-run, in the form of a catchment management strategy.
- Discouraging planting of Eucalyptus trees and encouraging planting of water friendly trees at the catchment area.
- Sensitization on use of clean water.
- Avail water by increasing the sources i.e. drill boreholes, earth dam, at the catchment area to augment the existing springs.
- All water points will be metered. A master meter at the production point to measure amount of water produced and individual meters to record amount consumed with the purpose of reducing non-revenue water while enhancing the revenue stream.
- Put in place an effective billing and revenue collection system so that all consumers are promptly billed, invoiced and revenue promptly collected for sustained water service.
- Strengthen distribution and service line patrolling to ensure prompt repair of bursts, leakages and vandalized structures.
